چکیده

Stomatal size and density are considered two key ecophysiological parameters, because they jointly influence stomatal conductance. In the present study, we examine trends in these anatomical traits along a 660-m elevational gradient on Mt. Moosilauke, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Samples were collected from two broadleaf tree species (Betula papayrifera var. cordifolia and Sorbus americana) and two herbaceous understory species (Cornus canadensis and Dryopteris carthusiana). Guard cell length increased with elevation in all four species (all p £ .10), but there were no clear elevational trends in stomatal density in any of the four species (all p 3 .10). A “potential conductance index” [= (guard cell length) ́ stomatal density ́ 10-4] was positively correlated with elevation for all species, but this trend was significant only for the two understory species (both p £ .10). Results are discussed in the context of prevailing theories to explain changes in stomatal traits with elevation.

The effect of spraying of methyl jasmonate and 24-epi-brassinolide on photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and leaf stomatal traits in black mustard (Brassica nigra L.) under salinity stress

Methyl jasmonate and Epi-brassinolide as plant growth regulators have significant biological effects on plant growth, including increased tolerance to salt stress in plants. In this study, the effects of salinity stress and its interaction with methyl jasmonate and Epi-brassinolide on chlorophyll concentration, rate of photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance and resistance and chlor...

Elevation-Related Variation in Leaf Stomatal Traits as a Function of Plant Functional Type: Evidence from Changbai Mountain, China

Understanding the variation in stomatal characteristics in relation to climatic gradients can reveal the adaptation strategies of plants, and help us to predict their responses to future climate changes. In this study, we investigated stomatal density (SD) and stomatal length (SL) in 150 plant species along an elevation gradient (540-2357 m) in Changbai Mountain, China, and explored the pattern...

Leaf morphological and anatomical traits from tropical to temperate coniferous forests: Mechanisms and influencing factors

Leaf traits may reflect the adaptation mechanisms of plants to the environment. In this study, we investigated leaf morphological and anatomical traits in nine cold-temperate to tropical forests along a 4,200-km transect to test how they vary across latitudinal gradients. The results showed that leaf dry weight decreased (P < 0.05), while specific leaf area (SLA) increased (P < 0.05) with incre...
